The Return of the Dark Lord

As the sky turns dark and the clouds dark red,
As the wind howls and thunder strikes,
As the earth bleeds and trees scream,
The world shudders with the Dark Lord’s return.

Fear the night for the dark lord looms,
Fear the darkness, for it is his soul,
Fear for your soul, for it is his prey,
As the Dark Lord charges to snatch your soul.

Stand and fight or run and hide
But none matters
For the darkness incarnate
Will hunt you down and rip you apart.

Days grow short,
Endless nights become searing cold,
And the world cries for mercy
For the Dark Lord hath returned!

Indian History - I

            Am sure that each of us, Indians have read laboriously the volumes of history books during high school, slept very peacefully during those classes where the teacher talked at length about kings, how they built wells, trees etc. I being a intrigued by history remember them very well. I also remember the  initial chapters of the history textbooks (plural used since I, out of curiosity managed to read history books of different boards) where they mention a few scant references to Indus Valley and other civilizations of the ancient past.
            Regarding the Indus Valley Civilization, it is usually mentioned that the society was divided into 4 groups and how Aryans came from the west and immigrated into India and gradually established themselves. This was referred to as the Aryan Invasion theory and as of 2003 it was accepted by all until probing by some historians, archeologists, geologists etc revealed severe inconsistencies in the theory. Initially this came with the finding that Saraswati which was usually referred to as 'The Mythological river' is in fact not so out of the world and was once a vast rich river in the Indus valley. The finding of the river led to the understanding that Indus valley civilization ended due to drying of the saraswati river around 1900 BC which corroborated with the end of the civilization. So now we know how the greatest civilization of early period with more than 1500 settlements around the basin came to an end. One interesting note is that there haven't been much written word that could be found in the ruins to decipher the language used then. So I would like to make clear that the language of the Indus civilization is not known.

            But as for the river saraswati, the Rig veda talk at length about the river, its waves, its vastness and celebrates it. It also mentions that the river swells from its various tributaries, is 14 km wide at some point and flows from The Himalayas to the great sea. Scientific evidences regarding the river saraswati and the course of  it getting dried is well documented and is proved that the river drained into the sea only until 3067 BC, then started drying and got completely dried by 1900 BC. So what does that suggest about the Rig Veda. Obviously when Rig Veda was composed, the river had been in its prime which means the Rig veda's date is definitely before the year 3067BC. Further evidences point to the fact that Rig Veda, the oldest of vedas should have been composed somewhere before 3500BC. Some would like to believe it definitely predates before 4000BC ( I personally find it awesome if that’s the case).  These findings undoubtedly makes it certain that Rig Veda is by far the oldest surviving written manuscript in the world.
            This would be first of many of my ideas and thoughts connecting it to the current day world etc.
Finally I would also like to give a link to the video by Dr. Nicholas Khazanas, a vedic researcher who did a great amount of work to make certain that Aryan Invasion theory is complete non-sense.
P.S: I would like to make myself clear at this point that I feel highly elated to know the rich and ancient history of our country. Though it is partly because, I myself am a Rig Vedhi, it is also true that I am an Indian and am sure that as an Indian everyone would like to be proud of our lineage. Again, this doesn’t mean dravidians has nothing to do with this. Indians, we, are all part of this rich tradition and irrespective of our language, culture, tradition and religion, we must acknowledge our past and I would like to push my surroundings a little bit into that through the blog series

India, A democracy??

     I am confident that anyone would agree to the fact that India is a democracy. In fact, India is the biggest democracy in the world. Well, that's what we have been told till now as students. And it is one of the proud aspects when we call ourselves an Indian. But is it? Is India really a democracy? Did we truly overcome the 2500 years  of dynasty rule?  I am afraid that it's not the case. Though we have officially abolished the 'Raja' 'Maharaja' and all such royal titles it is an undeniable fact that we are still under the dynasty rule.  For some reason, even though the citizens have been given the option to rule by themselves, we still choose to be ruled the sons of daughters of the previous rulers.
Sadly, this is not an individual scenario happening only in one part of the country. This phenomenon is as widely prevalent as poverty and illiteracy. Not only is this observed in 'The ruling class' but also in all strata and domains around the country. It is so common in all fields from politics and cricket to entertainment and all over the country from the centre to state.
     If a single family runs the country for more than 50 years... If a single family runs the country for four generations, is it still called democracy?  The predecessor is the one who gladly chose to split India into two halves so that he could rule his half and let his family reign for half a century. An incompetent who couldn't solve the Kashmir issue which still looms around the head of India. His successor, the famous person who almost became a dictator who finally had to pay for their deeds with blood. The grandchild of the predecessor who gave India the legacy of being ruled by an alien. Thus stands the story which in a few years would continue to grow as interesting as it had till now.
                An octogenarian living his last few months, the famous atheist who secretly prays to God near his home, the guy who couldn't even pay his house rent and had to run away from his home town to city but now owns billions ( and if asked how he got the wealth innocently replies that he obtained it by writing script for films), the leader who is supposed to be a living example but juggles between his wives, the party president who removes candidates and then reconciles depending on his whims is the leader who proudly said that his son would be his successor when there are grey hairs all around the conference hall waiting for a blocked chance. This sect of family reigns (once reigned) over one of the important states in the country.
                What is it that makes us run around the cyclic pit of dynasty rule even when we are given reigns to ourselves?

Metal winged angel

The silent selfish champion
Of words, thoughts and ideas
The boisterous calculating annihilator
Of pride, virtue and pity

Oh! My metal winged angel!

For reasons known, I adore you.
And for reasons unknown, they fear you.
From ancient times have they despised you,
And for that one known reason I love you.

Oh! My red rose with a poison ivy!

Standing at the edge of the cliff,
I wait for my stone hearted lady of love.
With every moment alone, a pain,
I wait alone for life’s accomplice.

Oh metal winged angel!
The red rose with a poison ivy.
My stone hearted lady of love;
Come to me, my malignant accomplice!

Belief, Worship and Prayer

Whenever I tell people that I have gone to a temple, a religious place or that I did some ritual, I usually get a glance which conveys the idea, “You are equivocal my dear! Be true to one belief of yours.” As for others who did not know it till then; yes, I do go to all the temples but no I don’t worship all the deities. Yes, I do perform some of the religious rituals that have to be done but no I don’t believe in the reason for which it is being done.

People usually don’t find much difference between praying, worshipping and believing in ‘God’ as in most cases all three go hand in hand. By ‘God’ I do mean the conventional God that everyone worships in temples, churches, mosques etc… As for me, all three are quite distinct. Yes I do worship to ‘A God’ just because I find His personal traits inspiring. He is more of a Hero to me than a God. In a country where film stars are worshipped as Gods can’t I worship God as a hero? Just because I worship him and consider him as my Lord and superior doesn’t mean I believe in His existence. Although I sincerely wish for His presence to be a truth, I sadly have to acknowledge the fact that in life we never get what we wish for.

Prayer is one silly custom that every religion has which seems to be completely pointless. When we were children we used to ask our parents every toy, candy and ice cream that we could get a glimpse of. Parents, who are supposed to know what is better for us, delivered only those things to us although we wanted them all. Just the same way we grown-ups still ask God for favours, money, achievement etc. and wait for God to deliver it to us. If God is supposed to be all-knowing omniscient being doesn’t he know what is good for his child (You!)?

I believe almost all religions believe that it was God who created the universe, put things into action and holds a divine plan, a blueprint of what has to happen since the creation. If by chance a person prays to God asking for a favour (considering that God exists) and that particular wish contradict His plan, what is He supposed to do? Change the entire plan along with all its repercussions that would echo for billions of years to follow, just for a single puny mortal or should He disregard the prayer and stick to His own plan? If He would change His plans for every tom, dick and harry with a bible, Quran or Gita praying sincerely, what sort of amateur plan would that be? I don’t think an omnipotent and omniscient individual is allowed to be this incompetent. Or if the God sticks only to his own plan and maintains order, why bother praying in the first place? Let the thing happen according to God’s wish and will. Hence, I don’t find the need for a prayer at all!

What would your reaction be to your friend who keeps asking you for helps and favours at every turn of his life? I am sure you would get pissed off. If we can’t even give ear to a single person’s requests, what do you think would be God’s reaction to almost 6 billion stupid prayers that he is expected to answer each day? I don’t think it is a good idea to piss off or create a bad impression on an omnipotent being.

Although I do have taken a lot of challenges with God asking Him to do something as a proof of His existence, the one thing that I have always encountered is that the probability of occurrence is always half. {Refer God(?? Or !!) }. Irrespective of the God you pray and the rituals you follow, I am sure that the probability of a prayer being answered is going to be just the same for every person; the same 50%. So pick your God of choice, pray to Him and enjoy your life! As for me, am content with not receiving the wrath of God by praying to Him!! ;) :P

Hence Proved!!

This has been a usual happening for the past few months when someone starts talking about God, prayer, worship etc… and finally end up asking about religion to me. Unable to control myself I start my ramblings on the idea of God which results in the person making a facial expression which usually resembles his/her idea,” Why the hell did I ask his opinion?” The instant I say the magic words,” I am God and you are too!” people confirm that I am deluded! Since this kept getting more and more prominent, I have finally decided that I will prove what I say. Yes readers, I am going to prove that You are God.

Axiom or Known fact: Before the beginning of Universe nothing existed except God.
Religions that talk about creation say that before Universe was created nothing existed other than God. Science (Big Bang Theory – the original theory and not the sitcom) states that all contents in the Universe was compressed into a tiny particle (Lets call it the God particle) before the Big Bang after which expansion started. So we can now stick to the fact that before the creation or beginning of Universe only God or The God particle existed.

Let us consider two examples of creator and creation in our everyday life. A potter creates a pot by using the raw material clay. Similarly a goldsmith creates gold ornaments using the raw material gold. In both cases although potter or goldsmith is the creator of pot or ornament, unless they have the necessary raw materials, neither of them can bring into existence a pot or jewellery out of thin air.

If God is the creator of Universe, then He also would have definitely needed a raw material to create the cosmos. But we also know that before ‘The Creation’ there was nothing else. So what is the precursor or raw material for him to build the Universe?

Let us consider another classic example of a spider who builds its nest (spider web) using its own saliva. In this case the spider creates the web using itself as the material. Or in other words, the spider is both the creator and the creation. This seems to be the similar problem that God must have faced billions of years ago! Hence God used the only raw material available for him then to create the Universe. As a spider spins a web from its saliva for creating a home, God spun a Universe out of Himself and thus the Universe was born. Hence it is obvious that the God is both the creator and the creation. We humans along with every other material surrounding us are all part of this Universe.

Similarly according to Big Bang theory, The God Particle underwent a huge explosion which finally resulted in creation of our present Universe. So every object around us, You, I etc… have come from this single God Particle. Thereby, irrespective of my belief (whether I believe in God or not) one thing that is most certain is that we all have originated from a single entity called either God or The God Particle.

Hence proved!!!

God (?? or !!)

A few months back when someone told me to watch a movie called, “A Man From Earth” and added that it’s a good movie, I, like every normal Indian youth, downloaded the movie from torrent and watched it, which was when I realized how wrong my friend’s comments were about the movie. It was not just a ‘good movie’ but was a life changing one which unconsciously changed many of my views on religion, life and me. In brief, the movie is all about a 14,000 year old man from upper paleolithic age who survives until the present day, his unique experiences, ideas and his beliefs. The man starts his experience by narrating about his early life, rise and fall of empires and finally reaches a crescendo when he reveals his identity.

So why am I writing a review of an already well acclaimed science fiction movie that was released some 5 years ago? The reason is, the movie unconsciously has imbibed into me certain ideas. At one point, the oldman when talking about religion says,” Believe in what He (God) tried to teach without the rigmarole...Piety is not what the lessons bring to people, its the mistakes they bring to the lessons.” Yes I am going to blabber about this in the forthcoming paragraphs and these are completely my opinions alone and I do not wish to insult or dishonour any religion or its beliefs although I may talk my opinion about many of the practices involved in them.

Almost all religions, especially those of Indian origin and Abrahamic religions when started, stressed more importantly on the principles to be followed and the ultimate gain associated with it – to reach God or to reach the ultimate truth and in some cases both the same. The prophets who established the religion also laid some basic ground rules for the group to follow to facilitate easier practice of the principles without confusion. But as time followed, the principles got diluted and the rules became more rigid. Men who were head of their religion started bending the rules according to their whim in the name of God and made humans as sinners. The principles, the reason for which the rules came into existence in the first place is now long lost in books and rules are followed blindly without reason. Even the principles present in the books are twisted beyond recognition by the heads who followed the initial founder and modified it in the name of commentaries and explanations.

I definitely do not blindly accuse that all commentaries and explanations are fake and misleading. There does exist some worthy explanations but are like finding white grains of sand in a pile of rice. The original manuscripts of these religions cannot be directly read and understood by a naïve common man since most of them are either lost, mutated or is present in extinct languages leaving him to go for translations and commentaries most of which are screwed up beyond recognition leaving the ignorant man bewildered as to which path he has to follow. This was the same problem which I too faced unable to decide where to rest my belief. Unable to rest it at one place, I decided to test it.

Yes I am talking about the incident that occurred in Tirupati of which I’ve described about in the blog , “The Fortunate Folks” - http://www.thoughtsofvenky.blogspot.com/2011/04/fortunate-folks.html It has been less than a year since I had challenged God for 3 favors and asking for atleast one to occur! Interestingly, of those wishes, exactly a half of each of my three wishes has become a reality.

So does that mean that there is a God with conscience? If so what does that exact half signify? Or since only a half of all the three occurred should I stick to the idea that there is no God. But since the prayers seem half answered I come to this final conclusion. There is a God (definitely not the God what you are thinking right now). But he doesn’t have four hands and ten heads or he doesn’t say that all humans are sinners. Neither he asks women to cover their faces nor does he ask men to grow beard and cover their head.

A God is above all these mundane stuffs. He doesn’t ask you to praise Him and sing about Him. He doesn’t care whether you pray, worship and chant his name a million times. He is above what is good and bad to human race. A superior man may want his subordinates to do all of the above said stuff. But definitely, not a God. A God doesn’t even need to have a conscience to give justice at every single turn. God is truth and justice incarnate. He is the physical law that acts upon the universe, the law that makes earth go around the sun, the law that generates huge quanta of energy when hydrogen is fused to helium in the sun and the law that causes protons and electrons to attract and at the same time unite the same positively charged protons tightly together. He is present at every soul around you, every inanimate object that surrounds you, every celestial bodies including the very earth on which we stand and also on the empty voids that lies between two such objects. He is the Universe, the law that created it and the law that holds it together. Every single atom to supermassive blackholes, from suns and nebulas to yourself and your hated neighbour - we are all a part of this universal soul – The God.

Aham Brahmaasmi!!

Apology

A loosely crafted poem straight from the heart!

At dawn I hold you in my arms.
And at dusk I threw you out
As a worn out old toy.

Plunging your heart
With deep agonizing pain.

Forgiveness – a day dream
And mercy – a butcher’s knife.

A fool was I to lose my truth in you;
And search it in others.

With no words to speak
And no words to apologize
I stand before you
With tears of regret.

With shame for my actions
And hate for my being
I wish every second
To delete that single damned moment.

Broken Love

Let me rest in peace; Let me forget you
And let me suffer in solitude.
But please take from me,
Your aching memories.

Making my life a living hell;
You Haunt my days with ghosts from our past.
Haunting my days with every minute I cross;
You made my life a soft toy in your hands.

The groaning cry that emanates
When you come in my dream.
And the searing pain that implodes
When the dream vanishes in reality.

You forget my words and the promises we shared,
You disregard my love and the days we spent
You lose my love and lost yourself,
As you burn my soul,a can of carcass.

Let me live; Let me breathe
And let me smile once more
Please give me back my reason for life.
Give myself back.

P.S: Inspired from the song " Po Nee Po" of the album 3.

Declaration of Principles by Paulo Coelho

Lines taken from the paulo coelho's blog: http://paulocoelhoblog.com/2010/08/07/statutes-for-the-present-moment-2/

Sharing some of the lines that stole my heart!!

1. All human beings are different. And should do everything possible to continue to be so.

2] Each human being has been granted two courses of action: that of deed and that of contemplation. Both lead to the same place.

3] Each human being has been granted two qualities: power and gift. Power drives a person to meet his/her destiny, his gift obliges that person to share with others which is good in him/her. A human being must know when to use power, and when to use compassion.

4. Each human being has been granted a virtue: the capacity to choose. For he/she who does not use this virtue, it becomes a curse – and others will always choose for him/her.

5] Each human being has the right to two blessings, which are: the blessing to do right, and the blessing to err. In the latter case, there is always a path of learning leading to the right way.

6. Each human being has his own sexual profile, and should exercise it without guilt – provided he does not oblige others to exercise it with him/her.

7] Each human being has his own Personal Legend to be fulfilled, and this is the reason he is in the world. The Personal Legend is manifest in his enthusiasm for what she/he does.
Single paragraph – the Personal Legend may be abandoned for a certain time, provided one does not forget it and returns as soon as possible.

8] Each man has a feminine side, and each woman has a masculine side. It is necessary to use discipline with intuition, and to use intuition objectively.

9.Each human being has the right to seek out joy, joy being understood as something which makes one content – not necessarily that which makes others content.

10. Each human being must keep alight within him the sacred flame of madness. And must behave like a normal person.

11.The only faults considered grave are the following: not respecting the rights of one’s neighbor, letting oneself be paralyzed by fear, feeling guilty, thinking one does not deserve the good and bad which occurs in life, and being a coward.
Paragraph 1 – we shall love our adversaries, but not make alliances with them. They are placed in our way to test our sword, and deserve the respect of our fight.
Paragraph 2 – we shall choose our adversaries, not the other way around.

12.We hereby declare the end to the wall dividing the sacred from the profane: from now on, all is sacred.

13. The impossible is possible

Share with all!!

Pangs of Hunger

Tear down the clouds,
Ignite the sun,
Freeze the moon and
Purge the world.

Enough of
The deaths;
The cries;
And the tribulations.

Paint the moon red
Paint the night red
Paint the sky red
And wash the nations with blood.

Cleanse the world
Of the putrefying humans.
Set fire to them all
For a child died of hunger.

Set them ablaze
In the smouldering pangs of hunger,
And from the ashes,
Let the new order begin.

A world devoid of hunger
A nation united by bonds of blood
And a society lacking prejudice
But filled with pride of who we are.

Apologies

Once Maadhavan, a friend of mine (definitely not the film star) called me at around twelve in the midnight and said, “Hey EG how are you da? I am so sorry da. I have many a times acted rude and insensitive to you . Have neglected you and have been indifferent. Am sorry for all of it.” Well…. How do you think should I respond to it? I didn’t know what to do. So I said, “Hey why asking sorry and all. Chill! It’s ok da! No problem! Free... blah blah blah (formality speech)” and ended the call. I don’t know what made him to ask such an apology with self-confessions of his guilty acts. At first, shocked to hear such words, I started rewinding and replaying all the happenings and times when he had done wrong. Once I started reviewing all this, automatically all my wrongdoings and mistakes also followed. So the next day morning, it was my turn to ask an apology to him. The next day I repeated the same dialogue stated by him the previous day followed by the same blah blah blahs…

This apology that I asked acted like some sort of primer which initiated a chain reaction of many apologies that followed for the next few days. I started pondering over my mistakes and intentional insults and bullying that I have done till now and apologised for it. (Now, don’t act as if I am the only one who has done a bad act intentionally! Everyone does so, but the degree may vary! ) So, it was a pretty short list with some ten to fifteen names in it as far as I could remember. To some people to whom I was able to contact in phone, I called them and apologised just as maadhavan did. To some others who loathe me, I apologised through sms (may be that itself is rude! But whateva! It doesn’t seem like that to my conscience and that’s wat matters the most in the end to me) and for overseas contacts and for those with who I’ve lost all contacts, email, fb and gtalk was the means of apologising.

Of all the people I have apologised, they always came from one of the four basic categories.
1. People who were truly innocent and I was the real culprit and all of them forgave me with a warm heart and open hands. Usually their reply was similar to this, “Why bother asking after such a long time. It’s not even necessary. I don’t even remember it properly. Forget it!” or “It’s ok da. I have forgotten those things long back. It happened when we were stupid kids!:) ” I was truly happy after asking an apology to these people and made a note of never to lose them in my life!

2. People with who I’ve started the whole ‘wrong doing’ process and they took on to it after me. They weren’t as gracious as the previous group. Their words went on similar to this,“ Fine… it’s ok! Both of us didn’t know how to act and you acted weird. It’s forgiven. Am glad that finally you found the courage to ask an apology. Good! “My inner voice said, ”OMG! You are talking as if am the only one who is guilty. You are equally guilty, you self-righteous jerk.“ Unable to put this thought into words, I was just able to give polite thanks with all the blah blah formalties. Note made to myself: Keep a fair distance away from them in your life.

3. And then, there are those who have so proudly insulted me in front of others and in return I too have done a fair amount of damage. These people are the last ones who you want to apologize. They are not just self-righteous but also too proud of their actions that they still acted as if I was guilty right from the beginning and at present, I was the erred man and they, the forgiving God! And the worst part is, I can’t point that out to them after asking an apology and bring about another hateful conversation. So I became a wagdoll and nodded to every word they said. My inner voice scolded myself for going so low and talking to such ‘bragging bsratads’ (if you know wat I mean!). Note made: Goodbye... My dear!

The happy part is, most people were too gracious and apologised for their mistakes too and they fell in the first two categories. And I don’t have to talk about the depressing stuff since I have rambled on it throughout the post.

After all this happenings, why did I publicly come out and confess all that has happened??? Well, it’s not my mistake... a friend of mine who knew about my apologising series wanted a detailed explanation of why, how and the outline of what has happened and hence the post!!
Hope some enjoys it while the rest curse me! :P ;)

FRIEND??

(The poem was written around 3 years back when I had a big fight with my friend and we never spoke for 1.5 months! Posting it again after request from another friend!!)

Words, the music I heard from you,
Look, the most protective cover I had,
Does it had to shine and wane?
Can’t I come out of this bane?

The hatred, which comes without words,
The stare that makes heart stone,
To be in company, yet alone.
To be with mates, yet not you.

Let the sun turn ice cold,
Let the moon turn blood red;
Let seas freeze; mountains crumble;
For my friend turned me away

To walk solemnly through life,
To reach my end without your company.
O! Friend hear forth my words,
“Thou hath lost me.”

Let the sun turn ice cold,
Let the moon turn blood red;
Let seas freeze; mountains crumble;
For my friend turned me away.

I pity you; you angry me;
I loved you; you hate me;
You shall regret and feel ashamed,
But have no remorse for you had me.

The Elastic Toy

There I was,
Sitting at the edge of my seat,
Staring at the infinite stars,
And counting every tick of time,
As I wait for the reason of life.

Neither can I trust the sun,
Nor can I doubt the moon,
For the cruel tricks they play,
Makes time an elastic toy.

Pulling a few strained out seconds
To last for ages.
But bringing years of happiness
In a few blessed minutes.

Sickened by love,
I lay alone stranded
For ages and ages,
Awaiting her arrival.

Thrilled by my love,
Time runs ahead of me,
Gobbling up hours of time,
And sparing me a few minutes.

An Introspection

Enough said of the legacies India has given to the world hundreds of years back. After 64 years of being an independent country what have we achieved independently to brag about? Every year when January or August appears, we start chewing the same old corn of what religious leaders have done for the country, how independence was achieved and how finally India emerged as a democratic country.
Why have we never given a little introspection on our country nor have we ever tried to change us or our surroundings a little bit? Let me walk you through a few social and political threats India has been facing from Independence to this date.
India - a country devoid of caste, creed, ethnicity and geographical distinctions?
India widely boasts itself of being a secular country which treats every citizen equally irrespective of caste, creed and sex. How far is this valid? We can’t find a single institution, both Government and Private, which doesn’t have a column of community, caste and language in it. I was under the impression that it is only the Government and politicians who create this divide for their own monetary and vote gains which proved to be wrong a few days back.
A simple difference of opinion on fixing exam dates in my post graduate class resulted in complete pandemonium. Being a class where people from all over the country come together, it is a mixed population where we can find people from Tamilnadu to Kashmir, Rajasthan to West Bengal and from the metropolitan city of Delhi to tiny town of Tenali. Once a quarrel between two parties started, people started taking sides. Ultimately it became South Indians versus North Indians. The ‘Northies’ accused some of their friends for not participating in the bicker as they were south Indians. The same happened in the other group finally creating a split between the class. I have been wondering since then that from where North and South India came in fixing exam dates. When this is the case in a highly reputed Government Institute where every single person is highly intellectual, how can we expect the illiterate and the commoner to have the feeling of national integrity and unity?
The possible solution is to remove columns of caste, creed and community from all applications which I hope would result in removal of the same from the hearts of many Indians in a few years.

The Voter and the Voted:
When India is referred as a democracy, it does naturally imply that people are the supreme authority for who the Government provides service, by who the Government is being formed and from who Government is created. If so, why did we the citizens of India uproot all the social obstacles that India has faced so far? The mistake must lie either in the hands of the voter or the voted. Unfortunately, both the voter and the voted stand guilty.
When the constitution of India was being framed there were hordes of men who were illiterate but still held high moral values (Kamaraj, AnnaDurai etc.). The constitution could not deny such esteemed leaders their right of participating in elections and neither can they deny their right of vote. Thus came the right of Universal Adult Franchise and right to contest in elections by every single citizen of India. But at the present age when even many of the ‘educated’ have loose morals and where corruption is the law of the land, the illiterate become easier targets of vote bank politics and money for vote. Politics has become a money minting occupation that requires neither qualification nor a basic skill. It has even degraded to an extent where local gangsters have and are still successful and respectable politicians.
As for the voters, the illiterate become victims of ‘money for vote’ politics or they are brainwashed by parties which tempt them by feeding freebies. The literate who have the ability to bring a change shun their voting rights and stay at home.
The possible solution can be to bring about a change in the two rights stated above. The voter must definitely have an idea of the happenings around the nation and a minimum qualification must be affixed to excise the right to vote. Also the right to vote must be made compulsory and failing to do so should be made a punishable offense.
The voted must definitely satisfy all the above said criteria and also must show a definitive thirst for social causes by actively participating in social activities for a minimum of two years. Such credible certificates by organizations must be exhibited and verified by the election commission immediately after the candidate files his nomination papers before the election dates.
Though these ideas seem to be far from being realistic, I am sure such drastic changes are required at dark times to prevent India from falling into wrong hands that are capable of selling the our country for a few pennies.
